Warenford Cottages with Hot Tubs
Warenford Guide
Warenford is a small village in Northumberland, just 5 miles from Bamburgh and its famous castle. It's a perfect base for exploring the stunning Northumberland coast and countryside while enjoying a hot tub cottage break.
The village sits near some of Northumberland's top attractions. Bamburgh Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (4.5/5) are both within easy reach. The Farne Islands, home to thousands of puffins and grey seals, are just a short boat trip away.
Warenford has an interesting link to aviation history - nearby RAF Brunton was an important training airfield during WWII. The area was also used for filming scenes in the Harry Potter films, with Alnwick Castle just 15 miles away.
Cottages in Warenford range from cosy one-bedroom retreats to larger properties for groups. Many feature private hot tubs - perfect for stargazing in Northumberland's Dark Sky Park. There are also farm conversions and luxury barn renovations for those wanting something special.

Sightseeing
Warenford puts you right in the heart of Northumberland's best bits. Bamburgh Castle (NE69 7DF, open 10am-5pm daily) is just 5 miles away and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. It's one of Britain's most impressive castles with fantastic views from the ramparts.
Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle (TD15 2SH) are about 9 miles away. Check tide times before you go as the causeway floods twice daily. The island gets 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor and the castle 4/5.
Alnwick Castle and Gardens (NE66 1NQ) is 15 miles south and well worth a visit. The castle featured in Harry Potter films and the gardens include a famous poison garden. TripAdvisor gives it 4.5/5.
The Farne Islands boat trips leave from Seahouses (NE68 7SH), just 4 miles away. You'll see thousands of seabirds including puffins (May-July) and a large grey seal colony. Trips score 5/5 on TripAdvisor.
Pet Friendly
Many cottages in Warenford welcome dogs and the area is brilliant for four-legged friends. Northumberland has more castles than any other English county and most have dog-friendly grounds including nearby Bamburgh Castle.
The beaches are a major highlight for dogs. Bamburgh Beach has miles of sand and no seasonal bans. I recommend going early morning when you might have the whole beach to yourselves. The dunes behind the beach offer sheltered walking if it's windy.
For food, The White Swan in Warenford welcomes dogs in the bar area and serves good pub grub. The Joiners Arms in Newton-by-the-Sea (15 minutes drive) is super dog-friendly with treats at the bar.
Pack towels for muddy paws after beach walks - your hot tub won't thank you for sandy dogs! Also bring a torch for evening walks as Warenford has minimal street lighting, which makes for amazing stargazing.
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Warenford
Bamburgh Castle and Beach is number one on my list. The castle sits on a volcanic outcrop and has stood guard over this coastline for over 1,400 years. The beach below stretches for miles with views to the Farne Islands and Holy Island. The Armstrong family still live in part of the castle and have filled it with treasures. The great hall is impressive and there's a good tea room for afterwards.
The Farne Islands boat trips are unmissable if you visit between April and October. Grey seals bob around the boats and the bird colonies are incredible - 23 different species including guillemots, razorbills and those comical puffins. National Trust wardens live on the islands and give talks. One visitor said: "The noise and smell hit you first but then you're just amazed by how many birds there are."
Chillingham Castle and its wild cattle (NE66 5NJ) make for a fascinating day out. The castle claims to be Britain's most haunted and runs ghost tours. The white cattle are rarer than giant pandas - there are only about 100 left and they've been isolated for 700 years. A ranger takes groups to see them daily. One TripAdvisor review notes: "The castle is wonderfully weird and the cattle tour was the highlight of our holiday."
Is Warenford good for kids?
Yes! Kids love the castles, beaches and wildlife here. Bamburgh Castle runs family activities during school holidays. The Farne Islands boat trips are exciting for spotting seals and puffins. After busy days exploring, they'll love warming up in the hot tub back at your cottage.
Where's good to eat near Warenford?
The White Swan in Warenford itself serves traditional pub food. For something special, try The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh (booking essential). Seahouses has good fish and chips - Lewis's is my pick. Doddington Dairy near Wooler makes amazing ice cream and has a nice café.
Do I need a car in Warenford?
Yes, public transport is limited. The nearest train station is Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles). There's a bus service but it's infrequent. Most attractions are spread out so having a car makes things much easier.
What's the best time to visit?
May to September offers the best weather. June and July are good for puffins on the Farne Islands. September is quieter but still warm. Winter can be dramatic with big seas and empty beaches - plus your hot tub feels even better when it's cold outside!
Is there good walking near Warenford?
The walking is fantastic. The Northumberland Coast Path passes nearby. St Cuthbert's Way crosses the causeway to Holy Island. The Cheviot Hills are within easy reach for more challenging hikes. Pick up OS Explorer map 340 for detailed routes.
What should I pack for a Warenford cottage break?
Bring walking boots, binoculars for wildlife spotting, swimwear for your hot tub and beach towels. The weather can change quickly so pack layers. A camera is essential - the light on this coast is amazing for photos.
