Felton Guide

Felton's cottages with hot tubs offer a perfect Northumberland escape. This picturesque village sits between Alnwick and Morpeth, with the River Coquet flowing through its heart. The area combines woodland walks with easy access to both countryside and coast.

Nearby attractions include Alnwick Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), Northumberland Country Zoo (4.5/5) and Brinkburn Priory (4/5). The Running Fox bakery is a must-visit for its famous pies and cakes.

Felton has a surprising royal connection - King Edward I stayed here in 1297 during his Scottish campaigns, making it one of the oldest royal stopovers in Northumberland.

Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom hideaways to large group properties sleeping 10+. Many feature private hot tubs in enclosed gardens, perfect for stargazing in Northumberland's dark skies while enjoying a warm soak.

Sightseeing

Felton sits in a prime spot for exploring Northumberland's best bits. I always tell friends to start with Felton's own historic stone bridge and St Michael's Church, which dates back to Norman times. The village's 18th-century buildings give you a real sense of stepping back in time.

Alnwick Castle (NE66 1NQ, open 10am-5pm Mar-Oct) is just 15 minutes north and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. Harry Potter fans will recognise it as Hogwarts in the first two films. The adjacent Alnwick Garden (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) features the world's largest treehouse restaurant.

Warkworth Castle (NE65 0UJ, open 10am-5pm daily) is 20 minutes east and rates 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. This medieval fortress offers amazing views from its cross-shaped keep. The hermitage, reached by boat, adds extra intrigue.

Cragside House (NE65 7PX, open 10am-5pm, closed Fridays) scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor and was the first house in the world powered by hydroelectricity. The gardens are spectacular year-round.

Pet Friendly

We've found Felton brilliantly dog-friendly. The Running Fox café (NE65 9EA) welcomes dogs inside and even offers dog treats. Their sausage rolls are amazing for humans too!

Riverside walks along the Coquet provide perfect dog exercise routes. The path from Felton to West Thirston crosses the old stone bridge and loops back through woodland - ideal for morning walkies before breakfast.

Druridge Bay (NE61 5BX) is a dog-friendly beach 25 minutes away. Seven miles of sand means plenty of space for dogs to run. No restrictions year-round on the northern section.

Many cottages in Felton come with enclosed gardens, perfect for letting dogs out safely while you enjoy the hot tub. Some even provide dog beds, bowls and welcome treats.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Felton

The Running Fox Bakery (NE65 9EA) isn't just a café - it's an institution. Their afternoon tea comes on a wooden board piled with sandwiches, scones, pies and cakes. Everything's homemade and the queue on weekends proves its popularity. I recommend their Singing Hinnies (traditional Northumbrian griddle cakes) with jam. They open 8am-5pm daily except Mondays.

Brinkburn Priory (NE65 8AR, open Wed-Sun 10am-5pm Apr-Oct) sits in a wooded ravine just outside Felton. This 12th-century monastery has been restored to show how it looked in medieval times. The acoustics inside are incredible - they hold classical concerts here in summer. One visitor wrote: "The peace of this place is overwhelming, like stepping back 800 years."

Northumberland Country Zoo (NE65 8QW, open 10am-5pm daily) houses over 100 species with focus on conservation. The Scottish wildcat breeding programme is particularly important. Kids love the wallaby walkthrough and lemur feeding times. Recent TripAdvisor review: "Much better than expected, the animals have proper space and look well cared for."

Is Felton good for families with young children?

Yes! Beyond the hot tub at your cottage, Felton offers family-friendly walks, a good playground and the Northumberland Country Zoo nearby. The Running Fox bakery welcomes kids with special treats. Larger attractions like Alnwick Castle's broomstick training and Cragside's adventure playground are within 15 minutes' drive.

Can I get around Felton without a car?

It's possible but limiting. The X15 bus connects Felton to Alnwick and Morpeth (hourly service). Taxis are available but booking ahead is essential. For exploring properly, especially reaching beaches and castles, a car makes things much easier. Many cottages provide private parking.

What's the best time to visit Felton?

Spring and early autumn offer the perfect balance - fewer tourists but good weather for exploring. Summer brings longer days and warmer temperatures for beach trips. Winter has its charm too - imagine Christmas in a cottage with a hot tub under starry skies! The Running Fox is busiest in summer, so visit early morning to avoid queues.

Are there any good pubs in Felton?

The Northumberland Arms (NE65 9EE) sits on the old stone bridge with river views. It serves excellent local food and Northumbrian ales. The Trap Inn at nearby Broomhill (NE65 9SR) offers hearty portions and a friendly atmosphere. Both welcome dogs in bar areas.

How far is Felton from the coast?

Alnmouth beach is 20 minutes east (13 miles), with golden sands and dunes. Druridge Bay is 25 minutes southeast (14 miles) offering 7 miles of unspoilt beach. Amble harbour town is 18 minutes away with boat trips to Coquet Island's puffin colony (seasonal).

What's the best local food to try?

Northumberland's food scene is underrated! Try Craster kippers (smoked herring), stottie cakes (flat bread rolls), pease pudding with ham and Singing Hinnies. The Running Fox's pies use local ingredients. Chainbridge Honey Farm (NE65 8QW) sells amazing local honey products.
